github bolts on four million cores after a year of ai-shaped outages

commits are up fivefold in a year, and github says more hardware alone will not keep it up, so it is rebuilding how git is stored too.

a rough year, from the register’s reporting and github’s post.

github logged 7.4 billion commits in september, the register reports, five times as many as a year before, and a lot of that is coding agents pushing code nobody typed. the site has wobbled under it all year, with outages in february, april and august. by one reconstruction of github’s own status page, its 90-day availability sank to about 84 percent in may.

at its universe conference on wednesday, github’s jay parikh said the company has added 4 million cpu cores, 160 petabytes of fast storage and 50 terabits a second of network this year, and is moving to a setup in azure that should be finished early next year. he also said hardware is not enough. github is redesigning how it runs git around three ideas: simpler building blocks, storage kept apart from compute, and less coordination between machines. the register says github expects that split to give 35 times the throughput.

a service that is up 84 percent of the time is down for roughly how long in 90 days?

next: the azure migration is due to finish early in 2027. the test is whether the multi-region setup survives the next spike in agent traffic.
